Larian Studios is doing something few people expect of any game studio in 2024: expanding.
Following the commercial and critical acclaim Baldur’s Gate 3 received throughout the past year, Larian has become an example of how talented right-sized studios, with the right creative leeway, can truly reshape the way games are made. And this is an industry in need of some rethinking: With layoffs being the norm and companies like Microsoft, Embracer, and Sony closing multiple studios, growth has become the exception rather than the rule.
Smaller-sized studios have bucked the trend and created some of the most popular titles of the past couple years along the way. The biggest hits of 2024 include Palworld, Helldivers 2, Manor Lords, and updates to indie titles like Stardew Valley. While the crews behind Helldivers and Baldur’s Gate 3 are by no means tiny, they’re not the monolithic, hundreds-of-developer powerhouses that you expect to see behind industry-defining titles.
In short, massive publishers with a horde of studios are falling out of vogue amid a loss of talent and consumer support, and the answer to “who is making the next biggest game” is more impossible than ever to track down. The ongoing recalibration of the games industry is surprisingly leading to a more competitive marketplace, and it’ll be interesting to see how studios like Larian navigate the tricky question of how much is too much.

Grand Theft Auto VI publisher Take-Two expects to deliver the game in Fall 2025, CEO Strauss Zelnick said in a CNBC interview following the company’s earnings report. GTA VI, which is a lock as one of the most anticipated games of whichever year it publishes in, was initially earmarked for a 2025 release, but leaks and resulting internal tension have led to speculation that the game could be delayed.
South Korea reigns supreme again at the League of Legends Mid-Season Invitational following Gen.G’s victory at the international tournament on May 19 in Chengdu, China. Gen.G took down China’s Bilibili Gaming 3-1 in the final. Support Son “Lehends” Si-woo took home MVP honors for Gen.G during the most-watched MSI of all time: The event had nearly 2.9 million peak viewers excluding Chinese streaming platforms, according to Esports Charts. Gen.G’s win automatically qualifies the squad for this year’s League of Legends World Championship, which will take place in Europe starting in late September.
OpTic Texas took down the hometown hero Toronto Ultra to win the Call of Duty League Toronto Major on Sunday. OpTic’s win at Major 3 was a challenging one: The team was knocked to the lower bracket of the double-elimination tournament by the Ultra in Round 2 and had to win two full five-game series against New York Subliners and Atlanta FaZe just to get another shot at Toronto in the grand final. The gauntlet didn’t slow OpTic, though, and the Green Wall swept Toronto 4-0 to take the title and $150,000 of the event’s $375K prize pool.
Hades 2’s Early Access release on Steam has been a smash hit, meaning another Game of the Year candidate might be on the way when the title officially launches. Hades 2, which came out on Windows PC-only on May 6, has been almost universally praised, with the roguelike title receiving similar nods to the original Hades that was released in Early Access in late 2018. |

GameSquare is spinning off FaZe Clan’s non-esports assets into FaZe Media, a content creation hub that is still majority owned by GameSquare but also secured an $11 million investment from DraftKings co-founder and president Matt Kalish. The news follows FaZe’s decision to cut more than half of its creator roster and comments from Richard “Banks” Bengston indicating FaZe had already downsized from 140 people to around 30. The shift in strategy should make that $11 million investment – equivalent to a 49% stake in FaZe Media – go a long way, but it’s unclear what FaZe Media’s go-forward plan will be other than leveraging its creators.
Fnatic and Team Liquid announced separate dives into mobile esports this week, highlighting a shift in how North American and European organizations are shaping their competitive strategies. Once considered a Southeast Asian phenomenon, the growth of titles such as Mobile Legends: Bang Bang has led to some of the most-watched events in the world as well as multi-million-dollar prize pools like those of the upcoming Esports World Cup tournaments in MLBB and other mobile games like PUBG Mobile, Honor of Kings and Free Fire. Liquid brought on two MLBB rosters through the acquisition of STUN.GG, while Fnatic partnered with ONIC PH to throw its hat in the MLBB ring.
Chipotle remains undefeated among the fighting game community following its latest win: partnering with esports organization Disguised for its expansion into TEKKEN 8. Chipotle, a longtime supporter of both fighting game titles and esports tournaments – from Street Fighter to TEKKEN, international events like the recently completed Evo, and more – gave Disguised the boost it needed to sign TEKKEN pro Phi “PhiDX” Lam. |

HELLDIVERS TAKES A DIVE
How powerful are gaming communities? Ask Sony, which nearly obliterated one of the most popular games of the year by trying to ride its coattails and secure PlayStation account signups with it.
Helldivers 2, produced by Arrowhead Game Studios, is one of the most-played titles of 2024 and a stunning success for the PlayStation-owned studio. The game topped Steam charts and has seen unprecedented engagement on PC and PlayStation. However, even though the game is on PC, Sony asked players to sign up for or log in with their PlayStation account, with the expectation of a PlayStation account eventually being a requirement to play Helldivers 2.
When the day came for that requirement to cook in, the community outcry was extreme, with the success of Helldivers 2, loss of revenue from refund requests, and a massive blow to goodwill for Sony and Arrowhead looming. The consumer response was so drastic that Sony reversed course, and in doing so gave up what could have been a fantastic tool for acquiring users for its own platform.
The moral of the story: Don’t mess with a good thing. Gamers are allergic to disruptions of their platforms, particularly ones with such an obvious end goal that does not serve the players’ needs. |

IGN Entertainment has acquired a suite of editorial properties from Reedpop, leading to a shift in ownership for publications in the Gamer Network as well as layoffs at those outlets. Dicebreaker, Eurogamer, GamesIndustry.biz, Rock Paper Shotgun and VG247 were part of Reedpop’s sale to the Ziff Davis subsidiary, which is comprised of IGN, HowLongtoBeat, Humble Bundle and MapGenie, according to the announcement. Shortly following the ownership change, employees at several Gamer Network publications began sharing the news that they’d been laid off in yet another blow to the games media landscape this year.
Microsoft is bringing its Copilot AI technology to its video game platforms, with Minecraft as a testing ground for the service, according to Windows Central. The reveal, which took place during Microsoft AI and Surface Live, showed off Copilot answering player questions in real time and providing guides to solving in-game crafting issues. |
